To celebrate LISTEN’s new website we’re interviewing a bunch of local Australian artists to profile them on the site. Introducing GHOSTGIRL:
How would you best describe your music?
I would hope that it would sound like the calling bells from future temples…
How did your band / musical project start?
I have been writing poetry and singing and making random instrumental noises for as long as I have been able to hold a melody. It was only after becoming an adult, that i felt confident enough to share and develop my work as a musician. Where I couldn’t hide my thoughts on paper.
Outside of poetry and philosophical writing, which i would more happily share, it took time for me to blossom and lose my shyness and grow a belief in myself. Really physiologically embody the beliefs I held tight to my soul.
So it started the way a fruit starts. It grew slowly with sunshine and rain and became sweet was ready to release.. and then it dropped naturally. I released my first song online in 2011..
Do you make music with a political focus? If so, what is your focus? If not, why not?
Yes and No. I make music about internal freedom, the human conscious experience and it’s expansion. The evolving growth, Liberation and fulfilment of the human being is my primary focus. Our experiences and what makes us feel is part of that. Our internal journey is more where I sing from and to, though when we as a race are out of balance i believe there are HUGE political injustices and inequalities that occur and spread like symptoms of sickness. I see, feel acknowledge and oppose these oppressive abrasive regimes and political conditions, I believe things that need to be shifted and that every citizen on earth had the right to peace safety and harmony thats definitely something I am vocal about but perhaps more non-directly.
What has been the biggest highlight as a band?
People listing to my music is always the highlight.
Who are your biggest influences musically right now?
My biggest Musical influences are my friends who also make music (aka rx pistol, broken chip, MELTY, Keeno18, flower boi, colliding scopes, Nui leaf, third heaven. So, so manny of my friends. Too many to mention). They are a powerful influence, not in terms of how I would like my music to sound but simply seeing them take risks and make music and be bold in how and who they are creatively, I find that admirable.
Particularly in a climate when there is so much pressure on artists and art is such a product churning a huge machine of capital.. for the benefit of profit and sales and disposability. The artist, the artist’s message or the listeners, anyone who is a true artist i feel is very disheartened by the ” industry at large”, so to see people defy that and continue in spite of that influences me.
Where can people find your music?
I recently released my last album A.I (Ambient Intimacy) on spotify and all digital streaming services, though soundcloud and band camp are nice too. You can find me there under GHOSTGIRL.
