To celebrate LISTEN’s new website we’re interviewing a bunch of local Australian artists to profile them on the site. Introducing Bert Shirt:
How would you best describe your music?
Bits of 80s synth-pop with some 90s shoegaze guitar. Part Loveless part Miami Soundtrack!
How did your band / musical project start?
We formed a band for a Little Bands event in Hobart and kept playing gigs since.
Do you make music with a political focus? If so, what is your focus? If not, why not?
Feminist politics is a big element of why we started our band, through personal experience we took issue with the negativity surrounding women in music and wanted to set an example of women expressing themselves for others.
What has been the biggest highlight as a band?
For me (Isobel) definitely the biggest highlight has been proving to myself and others that music doesn’t have to be dominated by men or ”just something that your boyfriend does”, I can still create and express myself without being lumped in as just the groupie.
Who are your biggest influences musically right now?
70s-80s yacht rock, Miami Vice (CLUB TROPICANA), My Bloody Valentine, Isobel’s mum’s jangle pop band in 90s Japan!
Where can people find your music?
We’re just starting out so we have a couple videos on Youtube, but we’re recording an album next week.
